Precariat. A model of a Wall
object, 2015
Object: ceramics, wood, glass
46 x 46 x 30 cm
photo: Marek Lalko
'Made from ceramics, wood and glass, the object was presented as part of an exhibition 'Zakład' organised by the Multimedia and Visual Arts Institute of Zielona Góra University at the University Library Gallery. The microscale model of a rectangular wall is left open on one side and finished off with sharp bits of glass. For the sharp glass finishing the artist Kubiak used pieces of an actual wall surrounding a local Zielona Góra factory Lumel. This piece of art can be interpreted as a discourse model of precariatal condition. The reconstruction of a proven old method of security against burglars, as well as protection against the lowly paid workers, who would often steal the company's assets, this eroding wall opens itself to interpretation associated with the process of ghettoisation, which is often a consequence of functioning within precariat. It would be difficult not to translate the situation presented by the artist into the world of art. The model brings to mind the notion of social seclusion which is a common consequence of living in poverty, waiting for money to come, uncertainty of the future, existence without any security or stable living conditions or even being eaten alive from the inside by states of fear and helplessness, by inability to change ones situation. Kubiak's wall is a brick violence line simultaneously separating and incorporating all of the symptoms accompanying the lack of social regulations of so called art workers. Behind this very wall there is a whole grey area of women artists looking for refuge to no avail. (...)'
